Reauthorization of the elementary and secondary education act - PTA's call to action

REAUTHORIZATION OF THE ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION ACT
PTA's CALL TO ACTION

On March 27, 2007, National PTA released its recommendations for Parent Involvement in the Upcoming ESEA-NCLB Reauthorization. This initiative places parent involvement at the heart of any reforms generated in the reauthorization process. PTA has longed believed and studies show that parent involvement is one of the most critical elements in school reform and student success. The Parent Involvement Initiative is the first focus of National PTA, but they will be adding other areas of reform to ESEA as the process moves forward.

Attached from National PTA, are “PTA Recommendations for Parent Involvement in the Upcoming ESEA-NCLB Reauthorization, “PTA Position Overview for the Upcoming ESEA-NCLB Reauthorization, Talking Points on PTA’s Parent Involvement Legislative Initiative, and “PTA Recommendations for Parent Involvement in the Upcoming ESEA-NCLB Reauthorization Action Check List.

The Check List is a call to action for all units, councils, districts and states to contact their congressional delegations now in an effort to bring the PTA Parent Involvement Initiative to the forefront. In addition, contacting California’s senators and representatives now is the first step in building relationships with these elected officials and alerting them to PTA’s concerns about ESEA.

In addition, National PTA is asking that the initiative materials be disseminated to all PTA members, all levels of school governance and to our communities to raise the level of understanding about this important issue. NPTA advocates are closely monitoring the reauthorization process, which is moving rapidly. They are calling on PTA members nation-wide to be prepared to respond to their call to action at a moment’s notice. PTA’s greatest strength is our numbers speaking with one voice for all children. California PTA has an opportunity to influence the reauthorization, but that means all members must be informed and prepared to speak up.

California PTA has joined with the other members of the California Education Coalition to develop recommendations for the Reauthorization as well. CAPTA advocated for a strong parent involvement statement in these common-ground recommendations. The Education Coalition Recommendations are attached along with CAPTA’s ESEA Issue Cards/Talking Points.

Please begin educating yourselves and your members on the issues so California PTA’s voice will be a strong influence in reforming this law.
