National PTA - The Phoebe Apperson Hearst Awards

Purpose – The Phoebe Apperson Hearst Innovation in Family Engagement Awards are designed to recognize and celebrate achievement in building effective family-school partnerships.

Recognitions and Prizes – The recipient of the Hearst Award will receive $2,000 and will be recognized at the Annual National PTA Convention and Exhibition.

In addition, four Awards of Merit will be awarded to applicants who demonstrate exemplary family engagement initiatives. Awards of Merit recipients will receive a certificate of recognition.

Application Tips – Applicants for the Hearst Award must be a PTA in good standing and must have a valid 501c3 status. They must also partner with their local education agency (e.g. school or school district) to apply.

Specific selection criteria and points for each section of the application narrative are listed in the grant application. In general, successful applicants will:

  • Demonstrate successful implementation of family engagement programs, activities or policies that reflect PTA's definition of family engagement and PTA's National Standards on Family-School Partnerships.
  • Quantify the impact of these successful programs
