Thousands Help Kick-off PTA's Annual Convention

It was a great start to California State PTA's Annual Convention Wednesday in Anaheim.

Inspirational speaker Mike Robbins shared his compelling story with the crowd o several thousand PTA members. Robbins offered tips to the volunteer leaders about the power of appreciation.

State Superintendent of Public Tom Torlakson brought greetings to the crowd and gave an update on policy issues. Torlakson highlighted his work to promote student health and well-being., and he also saluted the PTA for its leadership in supporting the Our Children, Our Future education initiative. This initiative will provide new funding directly to every school site in the state.

California State PTA President Carol Kocivar provided the organization's annual report. Kocivar highlighted the progress being made toward achieving PTA's 2001-13 goals.

At the general meeting, National PTA President Betsy Landers also welcomed the delegates and presented California State PTA with the National Advocacy Award for California's work to prevent bullying. Landers also recognized the 23rd District PTA in Riverside County for their work promoting parent engagement.

As part of the convention, attendees participate in more than 60 workshops and trainings related to parent involvement, student health, safety, and running a local PTA.
