PTA Joins Effort to "Read for the Record" on October 2
California State PTA has joined up with National PTA and the Pearson Foundation to promote childhood literacy through Jumpstart's annual "Read for the Record" campaign. Read for the Record encourages participants across the country to read the same book on the same day - this year it will be on October 2, 2008 - as a way to show support for early learning and literacy (and to set a new Guinness World Record). Last year, the effort involved hundreds of thousands of readers and raised more than $1 million for Jumpstart to expand services to more communities throughout the country. More details about the program can be found at www.readfortherecord.org. This year's campaign book is Corduroy. Adults and older students will be asked to help read the book to children at events throughout the country. PTAs can help by organizing local events and/or participating in regional Read for the Record events. National PTA and Pearson are also offering a prize of $1,000 in books/materials for a school media center to one PTA unit in each state that has the highest participation of adults reading to children on the event date. More information about the contest can be found at www.pearsonfoundation. org/pta.
