Frequently Asked Questions

How can our PTA help improve student attendance?

Student absences have reduced the funding our school receives from the state for school programs.

Your PTA can help improve school attendance by asking questions. Does your school district have policies regarding absenteeism, truancy and suspension? Do parents have access to and understand these policies? Are educational alternatives, counseling centers and in-school suspensions used to improve attendance? How are parents of truant youth included in the solution? Does your school utilize School Attendance Review Boards (SARBs) whose purpose is, through the coordinated efforts of schools and community agencies, to divert students with school-related problems from the juvenile justice system? Are there community issues that contribute to absenteeism? Your PTA newsletter can share the answers to these questions with your members and emphasize the value of student attendance.
