Community Concerns - Introduction

The Community Concerns Commission deals primarily with concerns within the school and community that affect children and their families. Priorities for the 2007-2009 term include:

Alcohol, Tobacco and other Drug Abuse Prevention

Raise parent awareness about the dangers of alcohol and drugs and current usage trends, current and effective means of protecting youth from these dangers and the consequences of providing alcohol to minors.

Teen Driving Safety

  • Raise parent awareness about the enormity of the danger faced by motoring teens, and ways to safeguard them.
  • Work collaboratively with partners such as the California Safety Council, the California Highway Patrol and insurance companies, to promote automobile safety of children and teens.
  • Improve the quality and accessibility of drivers training.

Youth Violence Prevention

Raise parent awareness regarding all types of teen relationship violence, including physical abuse, bullying and gang violence.

Safe Routes to School

  • Raise parent awareness regarding the need for safe routes to school.
  • Improve biking and walking safety, and increase numbers of children who walk or bike to school.

Internet Safety

  • Raise parent awareness of dangers of cyber-bullying, online predators, etc.
  • Collaborate with partners to address issues, particularly by participating with the Cyber Safety Advisory Committee in their Cyber Safety Summit.
  • Encourage parents to work with and assist schools and communities to curb Internet misuse by students.

Waste Reduction in Schools

  • Encourage PTA’s and communities to engage in programs of energy savings, recycling and other eco-friendly practices.
  • Encourage school boards to adopt a policy regarding waste reduction.
  • Share best practices that already exist in schools and communities.
